The Delaware Post Card Collection - The Delaware Post Card Collection was first created by the Delaware State Museums and transferred to the Archives in 1992-1993. Many post cards have been added since that first accession. Subjects found here include local attractions, businesses, houses, churches, public buildings, local events, street scenes, recreation, and transportation. Special topics of interest include the USS Delaware Silver Presentation, 1912; Delaware National Guard, 1911-1916, including the Mexican campaign; Delaware State Building, Jamestown Exposition, 1907; State Seal and Governor Post Card, 1905; and the Delaware State Girl, Seal and Flower, 1907.
Eberlein Photograph Collection - The Eberlein Collection consists of photographs taken for Harold Donaldson Eberlein and Cortlandt U.D. Hubbard’s book, Historic Houses and Buildings of Delaware, published by the Public Archives Commission in 1962. Primarily, the collection contains views of houses, but includes some churches, public buildings, and schools. Not all of the photographs in this collection appear in the publication.
Fort Delaware Glass Negative Collection - The U.S. Corps of Engineers photographed construction work at Fort Delaware, Fort DuPont, and Fort Mott, New Jersey, before and during the Spanish-American War, 1898-1900. Many of the photos document construction inside Fort Delaware, while others show construction of gun batteries, emplacements, and earthworks at each fort.
Frank R. Zebley Collection, Along the Brandywine Photograph Collection - The Along the Brandywine Photograph Collection contains photographs of the Brandywine Creek and the nearby landmarks along its length. The photos were taken by Frank R. Zebley to illustrate his book Along the Brandywine which he published in 1940. The book and photographs in this collection track the source of the Brandywine Creek in the Welsh Mountains of Pennsylvania to its confluence with the Christiana and Delaware Rivers. In addition to views of the creek itself, the subjects of these photos include covered bridges (most of which have been replaced by modern concrete and/or steel structures), dams, nearby houses, mills, forges, and factories. Especially notable images include the du Pont powder mills, mills and bridges in Wilmington, the Delaware Art Museum, and views of buildings and houses along the river as it winds its way through Wilmington.
Frank R. Zebley Collection, Churches of Delaware Photograph Collection - The Churches of Delaware Photograph Collection has exterior and interior views of over nine hundred churches in Delaware. Taken by Frank R. Zebley for his book Churches of Delaware during the 1930s and 1940s, most of the photos found here do not appear in the book.
The George and Irene Caley Postcard Collection - George Luther Caley was a well-known genealogist, author, local historian and an avid postcard collector. When George passed away in 2005, the future of his life's work was uncertain. Irene Caley generously donated George's collection of Delaware and Delmarva postcards to The Delaware Public Archives to ensure public access to the images and for long-term preservation.
Hodge Photograph Collection - The Hodge Collection contains photographs taken by Charles William Hodge, an amateur photographer who lived on Kings Highway in Dover. These photos include views of Dover, Wilmington, Bowers Beach, Philadelphia, Angola, and Wyoming. A mechanic by trade, some photos were taken at Hodge’s workplace at E. M. Davis’s Garage in Wilmington and Bolan Motors in Dover. Many are portraits of family, friends, and coworkers. Photos that are dated range from 1920 to 1923.
Insurance Evaluation Report - This collection consists of a comprehensive list of state owned buildings created to serve as a guide in determining the amount of insurance to be carried. The collection shows the name and photograph of the building, location, brief description of the type of building and composition, total cubic feet, and estimated value of the building in 1941.
Jackson And Sharp Collection - Jackson and Sharp was a company in Wilmington Delaware that built railroad cars and ships from 1863 to 1950. The collection includes more than 4,000 images.
Janson Photograph Collection - The Janson Collection consists of photographs taken or collected by photographer Karl J. Janson. The photographs in this collection include views of Dover streets and buildings, several Wilmington landmarks, and unidentified beach and country scenes.
Kirk Photograph Collection - The Lewis H. Kirk collection contains photographs and several documents, mostly relating to Kirk during his military career. The photographs are of Kirk in the Delaware National Guard in the 1920s and 1930s, on Bora Bora Island with the 198th Regiment during World War II, in Korea during the Korean War, and with the 35th Anti-Aircraft Battalion at Fort Meade, Maryland. There are also a few photographs of Kirk’s uncle, Colonel John Wesley Davis.
The Meyer Keilson Collection - Meyer Keilson was an architect who specialized in stage and motion picture theater design. He took these photos during his travels in Delaware. The ninety-two prints depict street scenes, historic and public buildings, houses, transportation, and historic markers throughout Delaware.
New Castle Stereographs - Seventeen stereographs of New Castle scenes are contained in a collection of photographs received from the Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs. These photos depict street scenes, views of houses, views from the courthouse cupola, the New Castle waterfront, church interiors, the railroad station, and a cemetery. These date about 1878.
Pictorial History of Milford Photograph Collection - The Pictorial History of Milford Photograph collection consists of photographs reproduced by the Archives’ photographer from originals in possession of the Milford Historical Society and many local lenders for use in the book Milford Through the Years, A Pictorial History of Milford, Delaware. Subjects include street scenes, houses, buildings, churches, schools, hospitals, libraries, city government, fire fighters, organizations, events, activities, bicentennial observance, postal service, recreation, sports, theaters and theatrical groups, business and industry, agriculture, shipbuilding, transportation, news media, and prominent people associated with Milford. A few photos of Slaughter Beach are also included.
Project Delaware - This collection consists of 1420 aerial view color slides documenting the state in 1970, especially the coastline and state boundaries. Other major subjects include the Christina River from its source to the Delaware River, Cherry Island, Wilmington Marine Terminal, Fort Delaware, Chesapeake and Delaware Canal, Artificial Island, lighthouses, Getty Refinery, Appoquinimink River, Mispillion River, Broadkill River, Lewes and Rehoboth Canal, Indian River, Cypress Swamp, Nanticoke River, and the northern arc boundary. Cities and towns represented include Claymont, Wilmington, Newport, New Castle, Deemers Beach, Delaware City, St. Georges, Chesapeake City, Port Penn, Augustine Beach, Middletown, Odessa, Smyrna, Dover, Woodland Beach, Bowers Beach, Milford, Slaughter Beach, Milton, Lewes, Rehoboth Beach, Dewey Beach, Oak Orchard, Millsboro, Bethany Beach, Fenwick Island, Selbyville, Georgetown, Delmar, Laurel, Seaford, Marydel, and Newark.
Schwartz Photograph Collection - This collection contains photographs of movie theaters owned by the Schwartz family, including theater promotions and construction. The theaters include the Capitol Theatre in Dover; Cinema Center, Newark; Delmar Drive-In Theatre; Dover Cinema at the Blue Hen Mall, Dover; Kent Drive-In Theatre, near Camden; Mall Cinema; Miller Theatre, Lewistown, Pennsylvania; Sun and Surf Cinemas, Ocean City, Maryland; Super 50 Drive-In Theatre, Trappe, Maryland; and Temple Theatre, Dover.
State Board of Agriculture - The complete Glass Negative Collection of the Board of Agriculture consists of 2,017 images that were shot in the 1920s and 1930s. During this time period, many photographers were moving from glass negatives to film. However the best quality photographs still came from glass negatives. We present the work of Roydon L. Hammond for the Board of Agriculture.
State Board of Education Photograph Collection - Following World War I, Pierre S. du Pont donated $2.9 million dollars to aid in building new schools in Delaware as part of a larger initiative to reform the education system. This collection of more than 3000 photos primarily captures images of school building exteriors, documenting old and often dilapidated schools and the new construction that replaced them. Also found among these images are rare photos of school events, student organizations and parades.
Sypherd Photograph Collection - The Sypherd Collection contains photographs pertaining to Clarence D. Sypherd, a Dover pharmacist and state representative. This collection of photographs reflects Sypherd’s personal and family interests. Subjects include family and friends, family property, honeymoon and vacation photos, and views of Dover, the St. Jones River, Kitts Hummock, and Rehoboth.
Woodside Glass Negative Collection - This collection contains seventeen glass negatives of the Woodside, Delaware area. Subjects include the train station, a steam train at the station, street scenes, Woodside Methodist Church and the Elizabeth Jarrell store, boating on Derby Pond, baptisms at Derby Pond, women gathering water lilies, a tomato canning factory and a view of the Viola train station.
Wyoming Civilian Conservation Corps Photograph Album - The Wyoming Civilian Conservation Corps Photograph Album contains photographs taken by and/or collected by an unidentified member of the CCC camp outside of Wyoming, Delaware. Most of the photos were taken of fellow workers at the camp. A few include the photographer/collector. Other subjects include the camp buildings, threshing wheat near Dover, Marydel, Maryland state line, digging and clearing ditches, an unidentified school, Camden, baseball games with the Magnolia and Goldsboro camps, a bi-plane, and Tappahanna Ditch. A few photos were taken in the western United States and include views take in Idaho, Yosemite, Southern California or Arizona, and at the Pacific Ocean.
